Big Walk Patch Notes: 1.4.8 to 1.5.1 Changes (Sep 2026)

Updated 2026-09-03 · Steam Big Walk

The Big Walk patch notes published so far run from 1.4.8 to 1.5.1. House House shipped five numbered builds between 7 and 28 August 2026, after the 4 August 2026 launch. The mix leans heavily on fixes rather than new areas or items, but it is not fixes alone: alongside voice audio, network stability, collision work and save-data safety, 1.4.9 adds settings (Invert Look X, Frame Rate Limit and a vsync half option) and 1.5.1 fixes CJK font rendering, reworks the save deletion menu, rewords the host password prompt and repairs confetti launchers and stray lighting. The studio closes almost every announcement by saying the next patch is already in progress. Three of the four patch announcements also point to a full version history the developers keep on their own site; the 1.4.8 post does not.

One quirk before you read them: the official notes rarely name an item. House House writes around the names, so you get lines such as "the item that amplifies your voice now reaches a farther distance" instead. That reads as deliberate spoiler control, and some entries only click once you have found the object.

Dates are the announcement publication dates. The 1.4.9 list appeared inside the 1.4.10 post rather than on its own, which is why two versions share a date.

Big Walk 1.5.1 (28 August 2026)

The biggest patch so far, and the one most likely to change how a session feels.

Audio and settings

  • Separate volume sliders for different audio categories, so audio is no longer one control.
  • The item that amplifies your voice now carries farther.

World and collision

  • Clipping through certain walls was made harder, and a spot where you could pick up a player on the other side of a turnstile was closed.
  • Some confetti launchers that were not firing now fire.
  • Unusual lighting that persisted after a certain part of the game was fixed.
  • Shadows no longer stop drawing when the item that shows messages goes in a backpack, and a disconnecting player can no longer strand the item with a picture drawn on it on the wrong side of a wall.

Saves and challenges

  • Saves created before 1.4.9 could contain a challenge that reset itself after completion and then became impossible to finish. That is now fixed, which matters if your group is chasing achievements on an old save.

Menus and networking

  • The save deletion menu now names the save you are about to delete.
  • The host password prompt was reworded, and the join prompt is cleared after a failed attempt.
  • The network warning splits into two messages: slow connection and unstable connection.
  • Chinese, Japanese and Korean fonts sometimes hit a character limit and stopped rendering new characters. Fixed.

Big Walk 1.5.0 (26 August 2026)

A one-line patch: it fixed a single patch of trees that was missing collision. Nothing else was listed.

Big Walk 1.4.10 and 1.4.9 (21 August 2026)

Both lists arrived in one announcement.

1.4.10 concentrated on connections: general network stability work, a fix for the server going unresponsive after a player disconnects, more specific error messages for certain network failures, and warnings on the host and join menus when the game detects a problem that may stop you connecting. On audio it changed the sound of the item that lets you find other items, fixed the flare item's sound effect being cut off at the start, and improved voice stability so voices cut out less often.

1.4.9 is the patch with the largest knock-on effects:

ChangeWhy it matters
Session passwords are now required when starting a gameBroke community room lists, see below
New setting: Invert Look XCamera preference
New settings: Frame Rate Limit and vsync halfVsync is on by default from this build
Better protection against potential savedata lossPaired with 1.5.1's pre-1.4.9 challenge fix
Harder to clip through walls, missing challenge collider fixedFewer stuck players
Completed challenges no longer need redoing after a reloadProgress reliability
Two players can no longer pass a turnstile togetherRevisited again in 1.5.1
Game no longer stops working when a carried player disconnectsCarrying is core traversal

If you still hit join errors, a short player-written Steam guide suggests hosts leave the menu, create the world, save the join code and press play before sending it out. That is a player workaround, not an official instruction. More on joining is on multiplayer.

Big Walk 1.4.8 (7 August 2026)

The first post-release patch, and the only one so far written as an explanation rather than a bullet list. Some players' voices were far quieter than intended even at close range, and the game now does a much better job of lifting quiet microphone setups to the intended volume. Three details are worth remembering:

  • The correction takes a moment to calibrate. If a new arrival sounds quiet, keep them talking for a few seconds.
  • The distance at which voices drop off was not changed. The studio calls that falloff a deliberate design choice, like a platformer's jump height.
  • If you had pushed your system volume up to hear people, you can turn it back down.

The studio noted the patch reaches other platforms later than Steam, so a crossplay group can briefly sit on mixed builds. Voice tuning beyond the official fix is covered on voice mods.

What these patches mean for mods

Big Walk mods are BepInEx IL2CPP plugins and none are official, so a patch can break them without warning. Four concrete links between the patch list and the mod scene stand out:

  • 1.4.9 broke public room lists. The BigWalk Public Lobbies README states that the game's update forces every new room to have a password, which made plain room lists useless: you could see rooms but never join them. Version 1.5.0 of that mod publishes the room password on each card instead. Details on public lobbies.
  • Mod authors track a minimum game version. The BigWalkLocalizationAPI README, from the shared localization library that ModSettingsMenu lists as a dependency, gives compatibility as game version 1.4.8 and up, the first patched build.
  • Everyone in a lobby should be on the same game version. The requirements list in the N2N Direct Connect README, a mod that swaps the friend list on the Join Game page for a direct address and password entry, states that both players have to be on the same Big Walk build. That is a sensible default rule for any mod touching shared state.
  • 1.5.1's CJK font fix lands in the same area as localization mods. Localization packages ship their own strings on top of the game's fonts, so re-check them after updating.

Mod update dates cluster around patch days. On Thunderstore's timestamps, Big Voice was last updated 7 August 2026, BigWalk Public Lobbies on 21 August, ModSettingsMenu on 26 August and Bigger Walk on 28 August, each matching a patch date. No README says the patches caused those releases, so treat it as a prompt to refresh your profile after a patch, not proof of cause. The Big Voice guide author, asked in his own FAQ whether the mod still works after the latest update, says it probably does and to try it before asking: an expectation, not a guarantee. If something stops loading, start with mods not working and see mods for install basics.

Sources and last check

Checked 3 September 2026. Every version number, date and change above comes from House House's official Steam announcements for Big Walk: the 1.5.1 notes of 28 August 2026, the 1.5.0 notes of 26 August 2026, the combined 1.4.10 and 1.4.9 notes of 21 August 2026, the 1.4.8 voice explanation of 7 August 2026, and the 4 August 2026 launch post. Where the notes describe an item instead of naming it, the wording here follows the developers rather than guessing.

Mod-side facts come from Thunderstore package pages and READMEs for BigWalk Public Lobbies, ModSettingsMenu, BigWalkLocalizationAPI, N2N Direct Connect, Big Voice and Bigger Walk, with update dates as shown on 3 September 2026. Those are author claims about their own mods, not results verified here. The join-code workaround and the "try it before asking" compatibility answer are player-reported from Steam Community guides, and neither is an official position from House House or Panic.
