Big Walk Beginner Guide: Voice, Items and Your First Hour
Updated 2026-09-03 · Steam Big Walk
The short version of any big walk game guide is this: talk constantly, stay within earshot, and treat gourds as your only real objective. Big Walk is a cooperative adventure from House House, published by Panic, released on 4 August 2026 for Windows and Mac at $19.99, with crossplay to PlayStation 5 and Switch 2. The Steam store page pitches it as a game about teamwork and talking for 2 to 12 players.
There is no combat, no fail state and no timer on the main route. You wander an island, solve teamwork puzzles for gourds, turn gourds into keys, and use keys to switch on the transport that opens the next slice of the map. The store page names the pillars: proximity voice that fades with distance, echoes in corridors and muffles through walls; open-world walking at your own pace; expressive arms; and tools including walkie-talkies, laser pointers, binoculars, megaphones and flares.
Two design choices catch new groups out. You cannot hear teammates who have wandered off, by design, and you can carry only one item in your hands, so four people spread across a puzzle beat one person sprinting between its halves.
Set up voice before you set off
Voice is the whole game, so spend two minutes on it. House House shipped patch 1.4.8 on 7 August 2026 because some players sounded far quieter than intended even at close range; the game now pushes quiet microphone setups toward the intended level. The developers note this calibration takes a few seconds, so if a newcomer sounds faint at first, ask them to keep talking rather than reaching for sliders. House House have also said directly that they are not changing the distance at which voices fade out, because that falloff is a deliberate part of how the game plays.
| Setting or fix | Patch | Date | Why a new player cares |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quiet-microphone boost | 1.4.8 | 7 Aug 2026 | Friends who sounded inaudible up close |
| Voice stability improvements | 1.4.10 | 21 Aug 2026 | Fewer players dropping out of voice |
| Separate audio category sliders | 1.5.1 | 28 Aug 2026 | Balance music against player voices |
| Invert Look X, Frame Rate Limit, vsync half | 1.4.9 | 21 Aug 2026 | Comfort options added post-launch |
| Megaphone range extended | 1.5.1 | 28 Aug 2026 | Long-range shouting beats launch range |
If your group wants per-person volume control, community mods cover that ground; see voice mods for what they claim to do.
The tutorial zone, and what it is really teaching
Every player spawns in a private compartment, and past a short hallway you meet in a large red-walled room. The Fandom wiki describes posters around it demonstrating the basic actions: moving, pointing, throwing and waving your arms. There are stairs, buttons, pits of buoys, a giant tree, and two doors out; the larger one stays shut until much later. Do not rush through. This room is the only free practice space for three things:
- Throwing and catching. Handing items across gaps is the core of half the puzzles.
- Picking each other up. Players can grab and boost teammates, and the 100% achievement guide describes chaining grabs to reach ledges you otherwise cannot.
- Gesturing. That guide recommends agreeing on a set of gestures early, so the same signals work across many puzzles. That is player advice, not an official mechanic.
Buoys are the first item most people grab: an omnidirectional handheld light in red or yellow, on small podiums, per the Fandom item list. Full coverage is on items.
Staying together without losing your mind
You will separate. The tools for fixing that are scattered across the island rather than handed to you, and each fills your single hand slot.
| Tool | What it does | Where players find it |
|---|---|---|
| Walkie-talkie | Long-range voice between paired handsets; holding transmit blocks incoming audio | Blue and yellow pairs at four holder sites, plus one under the Blue Tower |
| Megaphone | Carries your voice well past normal proximity range | Three yellow stepped pedestals, each needing a teammate boost |
| Flare gun | Marks your position in the sky, and doubles as a light | Starting Area and beyond |
| Laser pointer | Points at distant objects, or straight up as a beacon | Tower tops and the Map Room |
| Binoculars | Zooms in on distant landmarks | Found on top of towers |
Those locations are player-tested community reporting, not developer documentation. With no tools at all, groups fall back on arm gestures; one Steam guide author has published a full signalling chart, summarised on hand signals. Backpacks and hip bags add slots and, as several guides note, can only be put on or removed by another player.
Your first hour: a concrete route
Progression is a loop. Puzzles give gourds, gourds fill slots, filled slots produce a key, and the key must be filed before it fits its lock. The Fandom wiki explains that step: filers sit around the map, each cuts a peg and then points an arrow at the next one. Five filers per key.
The 100% achievement guide, written by a player who finished the game, lays out the opening: find four gourds in the Starting Area, bring them to the key-unlocker, run the key through five filers, then place it in the drawbridge lock. Stepping onto the lowered drawbridge unlocks the "Big Walk" achievement, first of the game's 12. Another community guide names that cluster's puzzles: a crane near the tutorial exit, a spyglass on the mountain path, a blue house on the far side of the starter area, and green scaffolding beside it.
After that, the four coloured towers each want five gourds. Community guides agree on what each unlocks:
| Tower | Reward for its key | Suggested order |
|---|---|---|
| Red | Opens the Map Room, source of the map, compass and a laser pointer | 1st |
| Green | Starts the chairlift linking the Blue, Yellow and Black areas | 2nd |
| Blue | Switches on the trains | 3rd |
| Yellow | Opens the tunnel system and the coloured doors | 4th |
| Black | Unlocks itself once the other four are done, leading into the finale | 5th |
That ordering comes from a short community guide and is a preference, not a requirement. Red first is worth taking seriously, because until the Map Room opens nobody has a map at all. Details live on towers, and puzzle types on puzzles.
Five things new groups get wrong
- Splitting up before anyone has comms. Early on, staying inside voice range beats covering ground.
- Treating the tutorial as a corridor. It is the only free practice space for throwing, boosting and gesturing.
- Ignoring the filing step. A key that has not visited five filers will not fit anything.
- Forgetting bags need a friend. Nobody can equip their own backpack or hip bag.
- Fumbling the join code. Since 1.4.9 a session password is required when you start a game. A player troubleshooting note suggests creating the world, copying the join code from the play screen, then sending it out.
The rest of the achievement list, including optional ones like riding the chairlift and repainting yourself in the salon, is on achievements. And yes, one Steam guide's entire advice for getting more out of the game is to paint your group black and pretend to be ants, which says plenty about the sightseeing half of Big Walk.
Sources and last check
Checked 3 September 2026. Player count, crossplay, price, release date, the 12-achievement total and the proximity-voice description come from the official Steam store page. Voice behaviour, the calibration note and the deliberate falloff distance come from House House's 1.4.8 announcement of 7 August 2026; settings, session passwords and network changes come from the combined 1.4.9 and 1.4.10 notes of 21 August 2026 and the 1.5.1 notes of 28 August 2026.
Tutorial layout, item descriptions, key filing and the gourd loop are summarised from the community Big Walk Fandom wiki. The opening route, boosting, the gesture advice and tower rewards are player-tested material from the Steam 100% achievement guide and a short community BIG WALK GUIDE; the tower order is one player's preference, and walkie-talkie, megaphone and radio locations are likewise player-reported rather than developer-confirmed. Anything those sources do not cover, including exact default key bindings, is left out rather than guessed.
