Big Walk Multiplayer: How Many Players and Crossplay

Updated 2026-09-03 · Steam Big Walk

Big Walk runs with 2 to 12 players in one session. The Steam store page lists a flexible player count under its features, describing two players as a tight co-op run and twelve as chaos, and the community Fandom page repeats the same 2 to 12 range. Everyone plays online together through crossplay: House House's launch announcement on 4 August 2026 says PC players can walk with friends on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2. So the answer to "big walk how many players" is a range, not a fixed lobby size, and you pick where in that range you sit when you host.

There is no matchmaking queue in the base game. You host a session, you get a join code, and you hand that code to the people you want walking with you.

How many players can join a Big Walk session

QuestionWhat the sources say
Minimum players2, per the Steam store feature list
Maximum players12, per the Steam store feature list and the Fandom game page
Solo playNot described anywhere in our sources; the store copy frames the whole game around a group. Not confirmed either way
Drop-in during a sessionPatch 1.4.10 (21 August 2026) fixed a case where the server could stop responding after a disconnect, so players clearly come and go, but no source states a hard rule
Split screen or local co-opSteam lists Online Co-op only. No local option is listed

One detail worth knowing before you fill a twelve-slot session: the Fandom Tutorial Zone page notes that each player normally spawns in their own compartment, and that with a large group two players can end up sharing one. That is a community wiki observation, not a developer statement. Going past twelve is mod territory rather than a game setting, and it is covered further down.

Platforms and crossplay: what is actually confirmed

Steam lists Big Walk under Cross-Platform Multiplayer, and the developer announcements name the console side directly.

PlatformStatus in our sources
WindowsListed as supported on Steam
macOSListed as supported on Steam
LinuxNot listed on the Steam platform flags
PlayStation 5Named in the release announcement and the 9 June 2026 date announcement as a crossplay partner
Nintendo Switch 2Named in the same two announcements as a crossplay partner
XboxNot mentioned in any source we checked. Not confirmed yet
Game PassNot mentioned in any source we checked. Not confirmed yet

That last pair matters because "big walk xbox" and "big walk game pass" are common searches. Nothing in the Steam store data, the developer announcements, the Steam guides or the community Fandom pages names an Xbox release or a Game Pass listing, so this wiki will not claim one. The Fandom game page lists the launch platforms as macOS, Windows, PlayStation 5 and Switch 2 on 4 August 2026.

One consequence of crossplay: console players cannot install PC mods. Anything on mods only ever runs on the PC side of a mixed group.

Hosting, join codes and session passwords

The patch notes changed this flow after launch, so old advice you find elsewhere may be out of date.

  • Passwords are mandatory. Version 1.4.9 made session passwords required when you start a game. Before that, open password-free rooms were possible.
  • Version 1.5.1 (28 August 2026) reworded the password prompt on the host menu, and made the prompt shown when connecting clear itself after a failed attempt, so you are not retyping over a stale entry.
  • The join code is what you share. Steam guide authors describe passing around a six-digit code; that number comes from a player-written guide, not from a patch note, so treat it as player-reported.
  • Version 1.4.10 added warnings on both the host menu and the join menu when the game detects something that may block a connection.

Because there is still no in-game server browser, players built their own: one Steam guide advertises a fan-made board where hosts post codes tagged with region, language, group size and story progress, expiring after a day unless refreshed. A mod tackles the same gap from inside the game, covered on public lobbies.

Proximity voice is the multiplayer system

Big Walk's netcode exists mostly to carry voices. The store page describes proximity chat that fades with distance, echoes in corridors, muffles through walls and crackles over walkie-talkies. The Fandom Items page adds that walkie-talkies reach across long distances with the same push-to-talk limitation as the real thing: while you hold the button to transmit, you stop hearing incoming audio.

Two developer changes matter here:

  • Version 1.4.8 (7 August 2026) fixed voices sounding too quiet. The developers explained that quiet microphone setups were not being lifted to the intended level, that the new system needs a few seconds of talking to calibrate on a fresh player, and that they deliberately did not change the distance at which voices fade out, because that falloff shapes how the game plays.
  • Version 1.5.1 added separate volume sliders for different audio categories, and extended the range of the item that boosts your voice.

When voice is not an option, players fall back on gestures; see hand signals. If you want per-player volume control or a wider audible range, that is on voice mods.

When you get "connection failed"

A short Steam guide titled connection failed gives the simplest player-tested workaround: back out of the menu, create the world, note the join code, press play, and only then send the code to your friends. That is one player's routine, not an official fix.

The developer side of the same problem is documented in the patch notes:

VersionDateNetwork change
1.4.1021 August 2026General connection and stability improvements; fixed the server hanging after a player disconnects; more specific error text for particular network failures; host and join menus now warn about detected problems
1.4.1021 August 2026Voice stability improved so voices are less likely to cut out or stop
1.5.128 August 2026The in-game network warning now distinguishes a slow connection from an unstable one

If you are running mods and the join fails, strip them before reporting anything: several mod authors state this bluntly in their own readme files. The full timeline is on patch notes.

Saves, hosts and group progress

Progress lives with the host's save, which is why "how do we play when the host is offline" comes up so often. Our sources cover the developer side of saves but not a full transfer procedure:

  • Version 1.4.9 added better protection against save data loss, and fixed completed challenges asking to be completed again after a reload.
  • Version 1.5.1 fixed saves made before 1.4.9 that could carry a challenge which reset itself and became impossible to finish, and made the save deletion menu show the name of the save being deleted.
  • A Steam guide exists on viewing and transferring saves between hosts, but its steps were not captured in our research pass, so this wiki does not reproduce them yet.

Mods that change multiplayer

All download counts are from Thunderstore on 3 September 2026, and every description below is the author's own readme claim rather than something this wiki tested.

ModDownloadsWho installs itWhat the readme says
Bigger Walk1,484Host onlyRaises the ceiling past twelve players; the cap lives in the config file
BigWalk Public Lobbies2,828Anyone browsing or hostingLists rooms hosted by other users of the mod with the room password on the card; joining still goes through the game's own prompt and nothing is auto-filled
Better Proximity Voice1,628Client sideMultiplies your received voice range, switches voices between positional and flat audio, and labels who is talking. Changes local playback only
Big Voice8,154Client sidePer-player volume with an in-game menu; the author states it works with unmodded players
BigNameTags1,625Client sideShows each player's Steam name above their head, toggled with F3

The Public Lobbies readme is unusually direct about one trade-off: it publishes your room password as public lobby data on purpose, so anyone who can find the room can read it. Do not reuse a password from anywhere else. Thunderstore's Big Walk community also hosts mods built to disrupt other players' sessions; this wiki does not write guides for them.

Sources and last check

Checked 3 September 2026. The 2 to 12 player range, the Online Co-op and Cross-Platform Multiplayer categories, and the Windows and macOS platform flags come from the Big Walk Steam store page. Crossplay with PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2, and the 4 August 2026 release, come from House House's own launch announcement. Mandatory session passwords, the network error and warning changes, and the voice stability work come from the official 1.4.10 and 1.4.9 patch notes; the audio sliders, save fixes and network warning wording come from the 1.5.1 patch notes. Platform list and the 2 to 12 range are corroborated by the community Fandom page for the game at big-walk-game.fandom.com.

Player-reported items, not official: the six-digit join code format and the fan-made code board, from a Steam Community guide; the host-side workaround for connection failures, from the connection failed guide; and the spawn-compartment note for large groups, from the community Fandom wiki. Every mod row repeats the author's own Thunderstore readme and has not been verified here. No source we checked mentions an Xbox version or a Game Pass listing, so both are marked not confirmed yet rather than answered.
