Big Walk How to Fly & Prop Climb: Movement Tricks

Updated 2026-09-03 · Steam Big Walk

There is no fly button in Big Walk. What players mean by "big walk how to fly" is prop climbing: you hold an item, drop it, jump off it while it is still falling, and grab it again mid-air, repeating the loop to gain height. It is entirely player-discovered, documented in two Steam Community guides, and it is not an official House House feature — no patch note has ever mentioned it. Everything on this page is player-tested rather than confirmed by the developer.

Because this is a physics quirk and not a designed mechanic, it can stop working at any patch. Big Walk is on 1.5.1 as of 28 August 2026, and both climbing guides were published before that build.

The three-step loop

The "How to fly / prop climb" guide breaks the whole technique into a repeating cycle. The author's point is that height comes from the repetition, not from any single input.

StepWhat you doWhy it matters
1Let go of the prop you are holdingThe item has to be a free-falling object, not held gear
2Jump off it while it hangs in the air below youThis is where the height actually comes from
3Grab the same prop again before it drifts awayResets the loop so you can repeat immediately

Players report the whole thing lives or dies on rhythm: the guide's advice is to run the cycle at a steady tempo rather than mashing inputs, and it notes the sequence is easier to follow in its slow-motion clips than in text.

The two setups players describe

The same guide splits the trick into a moving version and a standing version, and says the best prop is different for each.

VersionProp usedHow you position yourself
MovingThe light ballHold it, keep moving forward, aim at the angle shown in the guide's screenshot
StandingThe mapHold it, stand still, aim at the angle shown on the map in the guide's screenshot

The exact aim angles are only given as annotated screenshots in that guide, not as numbers, so this wiki cannot quote a degree value — not confirmed yet in text form. The author calls the map the best prop for the stationary version.

A second, shorter Steam guide simply called "How to fly" gives an alternative recipe its author calls Big Flight: hold the glowing light ball or any other prop, look downward but not straight down, sprint either forward or backward, and jump. That guide leans on a fast repeat input for both mouse buttons to keep the drop-and-grab cycle going. Both guides also mention repeat or turbo key bindings — one suggests putting jump on the scroll wheel — for players who cannot hold the rhythm by hand. This wiki notes those options exist but does not walk through configuring them.

Which prop should you hold?

The guides name two props by nickname and otherwise say "any other prop". Note that neither guide links its nicknames to a wiki item entry.

Guide nameWhere the guides use itDocumented item match
Light ball / glowy ballMoving version, and the Big Flight methodThe community Fandom item list describes the buoy as an omnidirectional handheld light found on podiums around the map, which is the closest match, but no source states they are the same object
MapStanding version, called the best prop for itFandom places the map on a table in the Map Room, used together with the compass
Any other propMentioned as a fallback in both guidesNot specified further

If you want the full documented list of carryable objects instead of guide nicknames, see items.

When it goes wrong

The prop climb guide's troubleshooting section is the most useful part of it, because almost every failure is a timing error in one direction or the other. Players report these three symptoms:

What you seeWhat players say causes itTheir fix
The prop shakes in your hand instead of droppingYou grabbed it back too soon after releasingWait slightly longer before the re-grab
The prop drifts out of reach before you can catch itYou grabbed too lateHit the pickup input sooner
You jump but gain no heightEither your jump was mistimed, or the prop had not been airborne long enough to push offFix the jump timing, or slow the re-grab so the prop actually gets airborne

The guide adds that spamming the jump input papers over most timing problems, which is where its scroll-wheel suggestion comes from.

What patches have changed

No official Big Walk patch note in our sources names prop climbing, flying, or launching off items. What House House has repeatedly patched is the related category of getting somewhere you should not be:

VersionDateRelevant line
1.5.128 Aug 2026Made it harder to clip through certain walls; also stopped players being picked up across a turnstile
1.5.026 Aug 2026Fixed a patch of trees that had no collision
1.4.9shipped alongside 1.4.10, 21 Aug 2026Made it harder to clip through certain walls that could leave a player stuck; fixed a missing collider in one challenge

So the trick itself has not been targeted, but the geometry around it keeps tightening. Full history is on patch notes.

Falling back down hurts

Vanilla Big Walk punishes long drops. The Big_Landing mod description on Thunderstore is the clearest documentation of the base mechanic we have: fall far enough and the item in your hands is dropped and you cannot move for a few seconds. That mod exists purely to remove both effects and its author says it works as client or host. How carrying and dropping work otherwise is covered on belt and inventory.

Mods that fly properly

If the goal is height rather than the challenge of the trick, several Thunderstore mods do it directly. Descriptions are the authors' own README claims, not tested results.

ModDownloadsWhat its README claims
NoClip1,851Host-only free flight on the N key, with WASD, Space and Ctrl for vertical, Shift for speed
Big_Run2,933J toggles a speed and jump boost, both multipliers configurable, default 6x
SourceMovement1,376Source-style air strafing and momentum-keeping bunnyhops over the native terrain movement
Big_Person_View2,233Detaches the camera so you can fly it around, or park it and walk in front of it

All of these need BepInExPack_IL2CPP, not the Mono pack — see mods for the install route and best mods for picks by purpose. NoClip is host-only, so it changes nothing for a guest. One further mod, BigSlide, is listed with its author openly calling it cheating; we note it exists and leave it there.

The intended way to get high

Two things are documented as designed. The 100% achievement guide's authors report that chaining grabs between teammates — one player picks the other up, then swaps — lets a group climb walls and ledges they could not reach alone, which is the co-op version of the same goal. And the Big Climb achievement is simply reached on foot: ride the chairlift one station west to the game's highest station and climb the small structure at the peak. Both are player-written route notes; see achievements.

Prop climbing is a party trick in a game about walking slowly with friends. It skips terrain everyone else is still crossing, and proximity voice means getting far ahead mostly means talking to nobody.

Sources and last check

Checked 3 September 2026. The prop climb loop, the moving and standing versions, the prop choices, the turbo-binding note and the entire troubleshooting table come from the Steam Community guide "How to fly / prop climb" (guide ID 3780086825). The alternative Big Flight recipe comes from the shorter Steam guide "How to fly" (guide ID 3777717932). Both are player-written and player-tested, and neither has been confirmed by House House.

Patch lines for 1.5.1, 1.5.0, 1.4.10 and 1.4.9 come from the official House House Steam announcements and are authoritative. The fall penalty and every mod claim come from package READMEs on thunderstore.io/c/big-walk; those are author descriptions, not verified behaviour. The buoy description comes from the community Big Walk Fandom pages. The chain-grab tip and the Big Climb route are player notes from the "Big Walk - 100% Achievement Guide" on Steam. Exact aim angles appear only as screenshots in the source guide and are marked not confirmed here.
