Big Walk Belt & Inventory: Carrying, Dropping, QuickBelt
Updated 2026-09-03 · Steam Big Walk
There is no inventory screen in Big Walk. You hold one item in your hands, and everything else has to live on a worn bag: a backpack on your back or a hip bag at your waist, which is what most players mean when they say the Big Walk belt. The catch that defines the whole system is that you cannot reach your own bags. A teammate has to put the bag on you, put an item in it, and take that item back out, which is exactly the kind of forced cooperation the rest of the game is built on.
The other half of the system is losing things. Fall far enough and the item in your hands hits the ground while you stand there unable to move for a moment. Nothing in the official patch notes describes that behaviour, but a mod built to switch it off spells the mechanic out in its own description, so everything below about falling is community knowledge rather than a developer statement.
Your slots: hands, back, waist
The community Fandom wiki describes bags as items placed onto another player, and it treats the waist version as behaving no differently from the back version except for where the bag rides on you. Player-written Steam guides go further and say the two bag types are not equivalent in what they accept. Both sources are player-maintained, not developer statements, so treat the size rules as player-tested rather than official.
| Slot | How many items | Who can use it | What players report about it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hands | 1 | You | Your only self-managed slot. The interactive-map guide notes a walkie-talkie fills it, so you cannot hold binoculars or a flare gun at the same time |
| Backpack | 1 | Another player only | Found in blue ringed structures around the island. The interactive-map guide says it accepts any item size |
| Hip bag (belt) | 1 | Another player only | Also found in the blue ringed structures. The interactive-map guide restricts it to small items such as radios and walkie-talkies |
Two player sources disagree on the size rule, and this wiki will not pick a winner. Fandom's Items page treats the two bags as doing exactly the same job, separated only by where they sit on your body; the interactive-map guide instead calls the waist bag a third slot restricted to small items. A third data point sits on the mod side: the BigBack mod exists specifically to lift what its author calls a small-items-only limit on both the backpack and the belt slots. Nothing from House House settles it, so the honest answer is that a belt certainly takes small items, and whether it takes large ones is not confirmed yet.
What every source agrees on: each bag slot holds exactly one item. Fandom and the interactive-map guide both describe a bag as one extra slot rather than a container you can fill, and both are player-maintained.
Nobody can pack their own bag
This is the mechanic people search for most and it is not a bug. Fandom states that a player wearing a backpack cannot interact with the bag or its contents and must rely on other players to store and remove things. The interactive-map guide says the same about both bag types: they can only be attached or removed by a second player.
The point is reinforced from an unexpected direction. The Item Debug mod, which exists as a tool for mod authors, opens its description by explaining that the game never hands you a backpack on your own, so anything worn is impossible to test solo. That is a mod author's observation rather than an official statement, but it lines up with everything the guides say.
Two achievements are built directly on this. The player-written 100 percent achievement guide describes finding the blue spiral structures that look a little like parking garages, and having a teammate place a backpack on you for Big Pack and a belt on you for Big Help. The same guide notes backpacks turn up mostly in the earlier part of the island and belts mostly later on. Full routing is on achievements.
One more carrying trick from that guide: at the base of the Weather Balloon north of the Green and Blue towers there is a unique item that the guide says lets you carry one extra blorb, the community nickname for what this wiki calls a gourd, and it slots onto a backpack as well. That is player-tested, and no developer source we have mentions the item.
Falling makes you drop what you are holding
The clearest description of this comes from the Big Landing mod's own README, because removing the behaviour is the entire mod. It says Big Walk has a mechanic where falling causes your currently-held item to drop and leaves you unable to move for a few seconds. The mod patches that out, and its author says it works both as a client and as the host.
That README is the only detailed account we have, and it is a mod author's rather than the studio's. No patch note in our sources supplies a fall height, a stun duration, or a list of items that survive the drop, so those numbers are not confirmed yet.
Items already stowed in a bag go unmentioned there, which is a gap rather than a guarantee. If you are hauling something you do not want to hunt for again, the safe read is that a teammate's bag is steadier than your own hands.
The developer has touched bag behaviour once in a patch note. Version 1.5.1 on 28 August 2026 fixed a case where an item that displays messages could stop shadows from drawing correctly after being placed in a backpack. Version 1.4.9 also fixed the game breaking when a player disconnected while being carried, and 1.5.1 closed a spot where you could pick up a player through a turnstile. Everything else about bags here comes from players, not the studio. The full list is on patch notes.
Mods that change the belt
All of these are Thunderstore packages built on BepInExPack_IL2CPP 6.0.755, and every description below is the mod author's own claim rather than something this wiki has verified. Download counts were read on 3 September 2026. Installation is covered on mods.
| Mod | Version | Downloads | What the author says it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| QuickBelt | 1.0.1 | 2,212 | Press B to pull the item off your belt into your hands, and B again while holding something to put it back if it fits. Works in multiplayer and the host does not need it |
| Big Landing | 1.0.1 | 1,786 | Removes the dazed-and-drop mechanic on long falls. Works as client or host |
| BigBack | 1.0.2 | 1,552 | One Big Backpack toggle lifts the small-items-only limit on both bag slots, big light bulbs included. Requires the gugger Core library |
| BigActions | 1.0.1 | 697 | Lets you equip, stow, retrieve and unequip from your own backpack and belt using keys 1 and 2 |
QuickBelt is the least invasive of the four: it is a shortcut for an action the game already allows, and its author states no host cooperation is needed. BigActions is the opposite, deleting the cooperation requirement entirely, and its own author writes that this is not how the game was meant to be played and recommends against it for a first playthrough. BigBack's page says the host should have the mod for the full effect, and that client-only behaviour is still being tested.
Thunderstore's Big Walk community also hosts mods for throwing and kicking other players around. Those exist, and this wiki does not write instructions for them. Curated picks that stay on the quality-of-life side are on best mods.
Practical habits for a two-player run
- Decide early who wears which bag. Since you cannot open your own, a pair effectively has two shared pockets and each of you is the other's hands.
- Put fragile route items in a bag rather than in hands before any long descent, given what the Big Landing README describes about falls.
- Keep one hand slot free for the walkie-talkie when you split up, since the interactive-map guide notes it occupies your single item slot.
- Megaphones are a special case: the megaphone-locations guide, another player-written source, says a megaphone can be held or mounted on a backpack but will not go in a hip bag or belt slot.
For what each item actually does once you get it into a bag, see items; for where the blue bag structures sit relative to the towers, see map.
Sources and last check
Checked 3 September 2026. Slot behaviour, the one-item-per-bag rule, the "another player must attach it" rule and the backpack-versus-hip-bag size question come from the community Fandom Items page at big-walk-game.fandom.com and from the player-written interactive island map guide on Steam, which is also where the walkie-talkie hand-slot note comes from. The player-written megaphone-locations guide is the source for a megaphone being backpack-mountable but not belt-friendly. The 100 percent achievement guide supplies Big Pack and Big Help, the blue spiral structures, the early-backpacks and late-belts pattern, and the Weather Balloon carry item, which that guide describes in blorb slang rather than by the gourd name used elsewhere. All of that is player-reported.
Mod names, versions, download counts, key bindings and multiplayer requirements come from the QuickBelt, Big Landing, BigBack and BigActions package pages in the Big Walk community on thunderstore.io and are the authors' own claims. The dazed-and-drop mechanic is described only in the Big Landing README, so the fall height and stun duration remain unconfirmed. The only official facts here are the Steam announcements for version 1.5.1 on 28 August 2026 and version 1.4.9, covering the backpack shadow fix, the carried-player disconnect fix and the turnstile pickup fix.
