Best Big Walk Mods (Sep 2026): Voice, Lobbies, Visuals & QoL
Updated 2026-09-03 · Steam Big Walk
The best Big Walk mods are the ones that fix a specific friction point in a 2 to 12 player walk rather than the ones with the biggest feature lists. By downloads on Thunderstore, the community's clear favourites are Big_Voice for per-player volume, BigWalk_Public_Lobbies for finding rooms you can actually join, Big_Visuals for FOV, and a cluster of small quality-of-life plugins around the belt, the menus and fall damage. All of them are community software, none are House House features, and every one of them needs BepInExPack_IL2CPP rather than the Mono BepInEx pack.
Numbers below are from the Thunderstore Big Walk community on 3 September 2026, which held 67 packages across the Mods, Tools and Misc categories on that date. What each mod does is the author's own README claim, not a result this wiki has tested.
How this list was picked
Three rules shaped it. First, the mod has to still be maintained: everything here was updated between 5 and 26 August 2026, after the game's 4 August 2026 release. Second, it has to solve something the vanilla game genuinely leaves open. Third, nothing that exists mainly to disrupt other people's walks is written up here.
Downloads are a rough popularity signal, not a quality score, and they favour mods that launched in the first week. Big_Voice appeared on 5 August, one day after release, which is a large part of why it leads.
Voice mods: Big Voice and Better Proximity Voice
Voice is the whole game, so start here. House House has already touched this twice: patch 1.4.8 on 7 August 2026 raised quiet microphones towards the intended volume, and patch 1.5.1 on 28 August 2026 added separate volume sliders for different audio categories. The 1.4.8 announcement is also explicit that the developers did not change the distance at which voices fade out, and that they consider that falloff a deliberate design choice. If your problem is one friend being inaudible, try the official fix first.
| Mod | Version | Downloads | Updated | Dependency | What the README claims |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Big_Voice | 1.0.3 | 8,154 | 2026-08-07 | BepInExPack_IL2CPP 6.0.755 | An in-game menu that sets and boosts each player's voice volume separately |
| Better_Proximity_Voice | 1.4.0 | 1,628 | 2026-08-09 | BepInExPack_IL2CPP 6.0.755 | A voice panel in Settings, Audio: proximity range from 1x to 20x, a 2D audio mode, and a named speaker indicator |
The Big_Voice author also published a Steam guide for their own mod. In it they say the volume menu opens on F10 by default, that the mod is client-side so you can play with people who do not have it, and that achievements still work. Those are the author's claims in a player-written guide, not a developer statement, so treat the achievement note as unverified.
Better_Proximity_Voice keeps its own settings in BepInEx/config/com.bigwalk.voicesettings.cfg and its README stresses that the range change affects your own playback only, so nobody else in the lobby needs it. Its optional hotkeys ship unbound on purpose so they do not collide with other plugins. Full detail on both is on voice mods.
Lobbies: finding a group you can actually join
Patch 1.4.9 (shipped alongside 1.4.10 on 21 August 2026) made session passwords mandatory when starting a game. That single change broke the older public-room lists, because you could see a room but never get into it.
BigWalk_Public_Lobbies (v1.5.0, 2,828 downloads, updated 21 August 2026) is the answer the community landed on. Hosts opt in, and their room is published with its password attached as a lobby attribute, so the browser can print the password on the room card. Joining still runs through the game's own join flow and its own password prompt, which the README is careful to point out is not bypassed or auto-filled. The trade-off is that you only ever see rooms hosted by other people running the same mod.
There is also a no-install option: a player-built matchmaking site described in a Steam guide, where hosts post their 6-digit code with region, language and party size, and codes expire after 24 hours unless bumped. That is a fan project, player-run and unaffiliated with House House. Both routes are compared on public lobbies mod.
Visuals: FOV, third person and dark menus
| Mod | Version | Downloads | Updated | Dependency | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Big_Visuals | 1.0.1 | 2,759 | 2026-08-05 | BepInExPack_IL2CPP 6.0.755 | Unlocks higher graphics settings and wider FOV values. The README calls it client-side |
| Big_Person_View | 1.4.0 | 2,233 | 2026-08-23 | BepInExPack_IL2CPP 6.0.755 | Third-person camera on one key: behind you, in front looking back, free-flying, or parked in mid-air |
| DarkMenus | 1.0.11 | 2,094 | 2026-08-19 | gugger-Core 1.0.11 | A dark palette for the game's paper menus, plus an option to darken HUD icons |
Big_Visuals is the FOV mod most people mean when they ask for one, and it is the oldest package on this page, dating from the day after launch. Big_Person_View is the most actively updated of the three. DarkMenus belongs to the smolMods family: it depends on gugger's Core package (4,704 downloads), which adds an sMods category to the game's own settings screen and on its own changes nothing. Screenshots and config notes are on visual mods.
Quality of life
This is where the small wins are, and several of these are one-key fixes for things that cost you real walking time.
| Mod | Version | Downloads | Updated | Dependency | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ColorSelf | 1.0.11 | 3,359 | 2026-08-19 | gugger-Core 1.0.11 | Choose head, torso and leg colours from the game's palette and keep them between walks |
| ModSettingsMenu | 1.1.2 | 2,525 | 2026-08-26 | BepInExPack_IL2CPP plus BigWalkLocalizationAPI 1.1.0 | One Mod Settings screen in the main and pause menus for configuring plugins |
| QuickBelt | 1.0.1 | 2,212 | 2026-08-18 | BepInExPack_IL2CPP 6.0.755 | B takes an item off your belt into your hands, and B again puts it back |
| Big_Landing | 1.0.1 | 1,786 | 2026-08-18 | BepInExPack_IL2CPP 6.0.755 | Removes the dazed stagger and dropped item after a long fall |
| ShareChangedEyeState | 1.0.11 | 1,757 | 2026-08-19 | gugger-Core 1.0.11 | Lock your eyes to a chosen mood, shared with other players who also run it |
| BigNameTags | 3.0.0 | 1,625 | 2026-08-11 | none listed | Steam usernames floating over each player, toggled with F3 |
Two details worth knowing before you install. QuickBelt's README states it works in multiplayer without the host needing it, which makes it the safest pick on the list for a mixed group. BigNameTags was renamed from BigWalkNametags, and its README walks you through deleting the old DLL and config first; the old config file is ignored, so any custom values have to be re-entered after the first modded launch.
ColorSelf is also unusually careful about achievements: its README says the game's reward-only shiny colours are offered only when Steam confirms you have already earned the matching achievement, and that being painted a shiny colour by someone else unlocks nothing. That matches the salon route described in the player-written 100% achievement guide.
Fun and mischief, with one caveat
| Mod | Version | Downloads | Updated | Scope | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Big_Run | 1.0.3 | 2,933 | 2026-08-12 | Your character | J toggles a speed and jump boost, both multipliers configurable, default 6 |
| BigYeet | 1.1.0 | 1,766 | 2026-08-17 | Everyone in the lobby | Hold right click to wind up and launch a carried friend, or hold F to wind up a kick |
| NoClip | 1.0.4 | 1,851 | 2026-08-05 | Host only | N enables free flight through the world with WASD, Space and Ctrl, Shift for speed |
BigYeet's README is blunt that every player in the lobby should install it, and it is worth agreeing with your group first: throwing people off cliffs is funny with consent and tiresome without it. NoClip is host only by design, so a client cannot enable it on someone else's session. Big_Run's boost is large at its default multiplier of 6, which will separate you from a group fast on a game built around staying within voice range.
Who needs the mod installed?
| Requirement | Examples | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Just you | Big_Voice, Better_Proximity_Voice, Big_Visuals, QuickBelt, BigNameTags, DarkMenus | Local playback, local rendering or a local input shortcut only |
| You, and it shows to everyone | ColorSelf | Colours apply through the game's own look-change command, so unmodded players see them |
| Both ends | ShareChangedEyeState, BigWalk_Public_Lobbies | Eye state syncs only between players running it; the lobby browser only lists rooms hosted with the mod |
| Everyone | BigYeet | The README asks for a full-lobby install |
| Host only | NoClip | Flight is gated to the lobby host |
If any of these silently fail to load, the usual cause is the wrong BepInEx pack or launching from Steam instead of the mod manager. Fixes are on mods not working, and installation from scratch is covered on the Big Walk mods hub.
What this page leaves out
Thunderstore's Big Walk community does contain packages built for messing with other players and for poking at the game's internals, and a couple of them are popular. This wiki names the category once and writes no install or usage guides for it. The complete unfiltered listing, including everything omitted here, is on all mods list.
One more piece of etiquette, taken from the Big_Voice author's own guide: uninstall your mods before reporting a bug to House House, and check the Steam discussions first, because plenty of reported problems turn out to be unrelated to modding.
Sources and last check
Checked 3 September 2026. Version numbers, download counts, update dates, dependency strings and every description of what a mod does come from that mod's Thunderstore package page and README at thunderstore.io/c/big-walk, including Big_Voice, Better_Proximity_Voice, BigWalk_Public_Lobbies, Big_Visuals, Big_Person_View, DarkMenus, ColorSelf, ModSettingsMenu, QuickBelt, Big_Landing, ShareChangedEyeState, BigNameTags, Big_Run, BigYeet and NoClip. Those are author claims, not results this wiki has verified.
Patch facts are from official House House Steam announcements: 1.5.1 on 28 August 2026 for the per-category volume sliders, 1.4.10 and 1.4.9 on 21 August 2026 for mandatory session passwords, and 1.4.8 on 7 August 2026 for the quiet-voice fix and the statement that voice falloff distance was left unchanged. Player count of 2 to 12 and the 4 August 2026 release date come from the Steam store page.
Player-reported material is limited to two Steam Community guides: the Big_Voice author's installation guide, which is the source for the F10 keybind, the client-side and achievement claims and the bug-reporting etiquette, and a matchmaking-site guide that is the source for the 6-digit code board and its 24-hour expiry. The salon and shiny-colour detail is corroborated by a player-written 100% achievement guide. None of that is official, and House House has never mentioned modding in a patch note.
